My main reason to buy this tablet was to use it as a dedicated kitchen device with Google assistant. I tried to set the device to ambient mode and with external speakers plugged into the headphone jack. Unfortunately the ambient mode would not run consisitently and wouldn't respond to my voice commands (despite playing around with many settings and reading various forums for setup tips, as others seems to have the same problem). It seems to be particular worse with the external speakers plugged in (which did have much better sound than a stand alone Google device). The ambient mode screen is also very basic and boring and there not many options to customize it to look better. As for it's tablet function, I found it very sluggish and not very responsive to my touch controls. The screen was decent for it's specs (don't expect super sharp vibrant images and videos) and colors were ok. I did like the size of it as I could hold it easily in one land in portrait mode. But it failed for my main purpose which was a dedicated Google assistant device for kitchen use.  Good thing Lenovo has a great return policy and I got a full refund.

Nice review -- how were the WiFi speeds using only the 802.11n 2.4Ghz connection in both HT20 & HT40 modes?  The GPS is excellent on this.

Great article !
As a traveller, hiker, sailor etc I appreciate your comments about GPS, battery and Wifi. I'm not interested in gaming and videos but need a tool I can trust while out of home.
Most testers (and sellers) seem to think that 7 and 8 inch are for children, when in real world they are tools for travellers.

I'm going to buy this Lenovo after I read your article.

The look and the design of the Lenovo tab M8 HD Tablet sets itself apart from the other similar tablets in this price range. MediaTek chipset along with the long lasting battery ensures a lag free and steady performance without nay glitch which makes it all the more worth the price.

Lenovo has updated its range of affordable tablets and created an Android Pie device with an 8-inch screen: the Tab M8 HD. The tablet is available from $140 and provided users don't expect a particularly high performance, they will not be disappointed by what they get for their money.
