There is already a decently popular Twitter client called Fenix that's been out for a long time. Strange choice of name.

It is just a codename... it will still be called Firefox once released.

I'm currently using Firefox for Android (not fennec as that's a different browser) and it's marvelous.
It runs smoothly, doesn't lag behind chrome 1 bit and is one of many ways I'm moving off the Google ecosystem.

Fennec is just the unbranded codename (F-Droid builds of regular Firefox for Android use this name since they are unbranded), Firefox for android currently is in fact Fennec under the hood, and around late 2019-2020 will likely transition to Fenix... I'm running the alpha build of Fenix right now and it is much faster than Firefox for Android (fennec) probably largely due to no longer running the entire browser in a single process as was required by Fennec. Fenix will bring GeckoView and android components libraries to firefox...and with it a much snappier interface and experience.

While I agree that chrome is smoother on android, FireFox is the only browser with REAL extension support*. If they release a new browser, it better accept all firefox extensions.

*I am well aware of samsung internet's adblockers and Dolphin's small extension library and yandex half !@# chrome extension support. But I mean real extension support with large library and no hoops to jump.

But why? I think Firefox is one of if not the best browsers for Android. Chrome sucks.
Because firefox is clearly lacking behind chrome in smoothness and speed. Their new engine will close this gap and make firefox much more enticing offer for the masses. If you try Fenix you'll see the difference.

Firefox for Android will begin to fizzle out later this year. Mozilla is moving their ailing mobile browser into an extended-support update scheme in order to focus on a new mobile browser: Fenix. Firefox for Android will continue to receive minor updates until Fenix is ready to launch, at which point Firefox will move into end-of-life.
