Good post. Indeed, it highlights one of the biggest drawbacks of traditional hosting services: the inability to hotlink, and the slowness caused by having to open a full page just to view a single file.
PS: In addition to the POMF alternatives, given its recent outage, I would add Luniatix .site for temporary files and Soliatix .site for permanent files. Both have a maximum size of 300 MB.
Google Drive, Mega, The Internet Archive - these are some of the most popular websites that let one store/share files for free. The issue with them is, they do not support hotlinking meaning they don't allow one to access content via direct, static links. Catbox.moe and Pomf.lain.la are thankfully free of that annoying issue.
