Quoteup to 32 GB RAM
32 GB unified memory will enough to fit and run frontier AI model Qwen4-27B[1] with decent context, and
if the 27B will also be of MoE architecture (it will be either MoE and/or dense), then it will also run much faster than the current Qwen3.x-27B dense arch (dense arch runs multiple times slower, because all 27B parameters are activated per token vs e.g. 27B-A4B, where only 4B parameters would be activated).
Calculating of available context tokens of existing frontier models, using an approx. minimum recommended Q4_K_M quants on 32 GB unified memory/RAM devices (16,384 [KV cache context tokens per GB][2]*(32 [GB total memory] - 7 GB for the OS[3] - [GB quant filesize])):
- For Qwen3.6-35B-A3B (MoE) (eg huggingface.co/unsloth/Qwen3.6-35B-A3B-GGUF):
~47,500 context tokens = 16,384*(32-7-22.1) (confirms the quote)
~31,100 context tokens = 16,384*(32-8-22.1) (1 GB more for the OS, this is how much every GB matters)
Confirms: Quote from: reddit.com/r/LocalLLaMA/comments/1sq94qx/is_anyone_getting_real_coding_work_done_with.. I've come to the conclusion that (1) 32768 is the biggest context I can get away with in an adequately smart model, and (2) it just ain't enough.
- For Qwen3.8-27B (eg huggingface.co/unsloth/Qwen3.8-27B-GGUF):
139,000 context tokens = 16,384*(32-7-16.5).
We see that Qwen4-27B MoE would really make 32 GB unified memory/RAM devices suitable.
In this memory sense, any gaming laptop that has the additional 6-8 GB VRAM GPU, is superior (700-800 bucks for a 16 GB RAM config, then just upgrade to 32 GB RAM, confirm that it has upgradable RAM). The additional 8 GB of (fast) memory/VRAM of the GPU makes all the difference in being able to fit and run these general purpose 27-35B SOTA AI models at a good context size.
If Qwen4 gets a reduction in KV cache context tokens memory requirements, like in [4], then the calculated context number will increase.
