That is pretty much the end of the Open Source story, because
when the company restrict you in any way to make whatever changes you want to make on a hardware you own,
you do not own it.

Why not just block warranty claims from unauthorized resellers? Pretty sure that's the standard practice.

Maybe it just to buy another device and leave theirs alone. For a company run a business on, make pi your go to that bad. I have a pi 3 and used it 3 times.

Raspberry Pi is actively preventing enthusiasts from upgrading soldered memory to a larger configuration even when the replacement chip is technically compatible. The company says the restriction is intended to discourage unofficial high-capacity resales.
