I think Sony is taking these actions due to the recent ps5 jailbreak on which allows full Linux access. I don't have a ps5 but I believe people have been able to run backup copies for awhile now. Probably something related to address this issue or an attempt to mitigate the damage anyway.
I dont understand, if you buy a game digitally you need to download it. For that you need to be online. Isnt that enough for one time online check? How would you, a user, see a timer on a not-downloaded game on console which wasnt (in hypothetical scenario) connected to the internet?
