Yeah, when Chromebooks first came out they were really cheap and could commonly be found for $200.

But after years of OEM price creeping, inflation and just the general cost of everything up -- they're no longer that cheap as they once were.

It's not looking gud brev.

What a crass remark to make.

What's wrong with women and old people? Are they not valued customers?

Besides that, I believe a lot of parents will end up buying these for their children, and schools might adopt these as well. I can see this product taking a chunk of business away from Chromebooks and entry level laptops.

While slightly more expensive, Apple, for better or worse, is valued higher by most users both technical and non technical. I'm sure a lot of people would prefer to buy a 599 Macbook vs a 499 Acer or HP.

Mainly thrifty shoppers who do not wish for Window's or Linux and don't have needs or use for higher performance (AND costly!) systems.

Frankly, quite a bit can be done on/with a Neo. While larger than an iPad the Neo offers more functionality and use cases 'out of the box'.

Surely a 'market reset' on what can be had & done with a $600 computing device.

The MacBook Neo is a polarizing device and Apple wants to attract new customers with a starting price of $599 or $499 for the education sector, respectively. There are technological compromises, but you still get the familiar MacBook experience with a comprehensive software package.
