Generational stereotypes have always been a marketing tool to round them up and define ways to sell them stuff and ideas they'd otherwise do without - and stereotypes are, well, inadequate and unrealistic generalisations that really don't fit anyone, unsurprisingly.

What a low quality piece. There's an awful lot of moral judgement being cast here on Gen Z, based on unsupported assumptions. Are Gen Z's priorities actually guided by "cold, hard self-interest"? Are they really disinterested in the collective good of the world because they have licenses or use air planes?

If I'm to do some speculation of my own, perhaps the reason young people are less interested in environmental concerns come from skepticism about new green initiatives. Take electric cars for example. Sure they don't burn petrol but how does lithium mining and processing affect the environment? What source of energy actually powers the batteries in them? Is it clean?

Perhaps also young people are concerned about the direction the world is going. War, economic struggle, AI replacement of jobs. These all take precedence over environmental concerns. And not to mention, it's expensive to care about the environment unfortunately. If you want to vote with your money and buy more environmentally friendly product options, typically you have to spend a lot more money, which typically young people don't have.

Anyways. I miss when you guys just reviewed laptops. You're the best in the business for laptop reviews but honestly all these fluff articles make me lose a lot of respect for your company.

"Divide et Impera" how this tool for ages works as a charm. Gen Z, old people, youngsters, teens divide them by age they actually all from different planets))) look like these people does not have anything in common. it is just irritating reading these articles. People in power use it for putting those agenda. Yet when it does not suit them, they unite some part of people, for example, when angry mob of former slaves from Africa, coming to them, they tell it is "our" fault, all Europeans, but this statement is fault, everyone knows that western Europeans and only them responsible for slavery and other bad thing even in nowadays, wars, poverty in other part of world, is a reason why these countries prosper...

After reading the bold pronouncements in this article, I read the study overview and found that while statistical data referenced in this piece is accurate, it significantly misrepresents the conclusions regarding the motivations of Gen Z.

While Gen Z is more pragmatic around transportation, 53% of respondents feel a moral obligation to act in an environmentally friendly way — a higher rate than in older generations. They do care, but they don't let it dictate their daily commute because the alternatives aren't practical. The study attributes this behavior to structural deficits, not selfishness. Many feel that sustainable options simply are not reliable enough to use.

Perhaps a more accurate conclusion to be drawn from the study is that Gen Z understands the limits of moral appeals and is frustrated that the world isn't making it easier for them to be green.

Images of Gen Z individuals staging climate protests are widespread, but the reality is quite different. A major study in Germany finds Generation Z to be unexpectedly pragmatic. Instead of idealistic worldviews, factors such as comfort, cost and convenience are paramount. The authors conclude that morals have little place in this generation.
