Probably because many people don't like laptop trackpads and bring a mouse which would take 1 port, and they may need a 2nd one for things like flashdrive. Of course one can bring an hub but some don't like doing that.

I dont know if I agree with replacing a usb A with usb C (not TB) is truly modernizing the port selection.

I feel the sweet spot is 2 legacy USB A, 2 TB 4/5, HDMI, and a headphone jack.

And for the creative laptops, include a full side sd card slot.

USB-A or USB-C? Many laptops nowadays forgo the old USB-A port completely, opting for only USB-C ports. HP recently redesigned its HP EliteBook business laptops, and the American manufacturer found a way to modernize the port selection sensibly.
