The whole global car industry would be bankrupt without subsidies.

Not all subsidies are there to keep business afloat, some are there to insure local manufacturing. Since the requirement of European batteries, it likely wants to keep the car and battery manufacturing locally and not lose it to China.

France is raising EV subsidies with an extra €1,000 bonus for cars built and equipped with European-made batteries. Starting October 1, buyers can now access up to €5,200 in support. The government is also reviving its EV leasing program for low-income households.
