Considering the 7980x and 9980x stayed in the same 350w tdp with the 9980x getting a 400mhz increase in boost speed, I'd say that AMD did a pretty decent job.

One of AMD's new Shimada Peak Threadrippers has appeared on the PassMark benchmark, where it performed more than admirably in CPU Mark. The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9980X desktop CPU utilized its 64 cores to churn out a multithread performance that can only be surpassed by EPYC processors that are destined for servers.
