I'll pay that. Sounds like an excellent move, but price will be the determiner of how well it succeeds. Already most mini-led monitors are too expensive compared to OLED and Sony's flagship TV is mini-led not OLED. For TV's burn-in with OLED is not a huge deal, so I would take OLED any day unless this new tech is a cheaper and gives the best of both worlds. Hard to see though how micro-led backlighting will not be much dearer than mini-led with far more zones and the fact micro-led require lithography to manufacture unlike mini-led.

Samsung wants to offer the benefits of microLEDs at lower prices by using the tiny light-emitting diodes not as individual subpixels, but as a backlight for a traditional LCD panel. The South Korean manufacturer claims that this results in an excellent picture quality.
