I like Starlink but it originally started at 120 for me as I live in Northern Maine in rural community & there are no other options for internet that are affordable.  The price was dropped to 90 just after I purchased it when it was introduced.  I had been using my cell phone as a hotspot as I was unable to find a provider.  So now the prices are back up to what the price was originally and there has not been any population increase in my area.  It is still a rural area, still no more people than previously here & why increase prices???? I can't cancel no other way to stream stuff up in my neck of the woods so to speak.  Elon Musk just wants it all so we have nothing I guess

I'm in northern Ontario, paid over 700$ for this when it came out. Now its costing me over 150.00$ every month. If it goes up anytime soon. I'm getting rid of this money grab.

Quote from: Ken R on May 16, 2024, 14:33:50I cancelled last year selling the hardware, I was a full-time RVr fir a while just can't justify the cost even where I purchased a house I'm in a $90 zone, but have access to cable Internet 4x faster for half the price of starlink, if I could turn in on and off by the day and only pay for 24 hour blocks I would keep it for trips and camping, Elon basically gaslighted people about the pricing of the service since day one! It was supposed to get More Affordable as the service grew and more birds were launched, if he doesn't get over himself soon the competition will bite back quickly!

Why would it get cheaper as more satellites are launched? The more that are launched the higher the cost to SpaceX. There are only a few things that can reduce price:

1. More users using the service would split the costs more

2. Government funding to lower the investment cost (that got denied recently)

3. The whole network going up + time, albeit since the network lasts only 5-6 years before needing relaunching, the gain would be limited

4. Lowering of capital costs (like starship being finished allowing to launch more at a lower price)

5. Yes, competition, albeit only because SpaceX would have to take bigger losses to secure the market

QuoteJust like the Tesla has turned into a big Flop one little bump and you have totaled the car. Batteries are to expensive to repair or replace, they wind up in a EV boneyard adding the environmental issues more than ICE vehicles. In so glad I resisted buying a Tesla . Tine to get rid of the little white dishy.

That is mostly an insurance issue where the insurance company lacks expertise to judge, thus they choose to total the car if they don't have the expertise. These things sort themselves out with time. Same for battery prices as they continue to drop in price

PS I don't think you have to worry about an EV in a boneyard, they don't last there long as they are a favorite of scrappers to use for projects, especially the batteries

Elon Musk is just getting greedy. He is obviously rushing his satellites and wants more money to support it.

I am getting ready to move back to our remote home and pick up the service, but now the Verizon hotspot is the option I'm going to run with. Ping is faster, speed is better, it's unlimited, etc. Starlink is really only be viable for water vessels soon. Maybe Elon is planning for the next water world event!!!

No surprise here!

While even AT the increased costs the Starlink service is generally the best performance for the price.

However there IS a limit to what people are willing to pay and many rural folks have lived for DECADES without anything close to 'high speed internet' so it is more of a luxury/entertainment/optional item rather than a necessity.

I purchased a dish kit shortly after service was available in area's that I travel in however at the current rate for mobile users given that I'd only be using it for 3-5 days a month it is not worth bringing with me and paying for.

More Starlink satellite Internet users in the US are starting to get monthly subscription price change notices from SpaceX.
