The point is to have a display that can support the varying resolutions of the devices it emulates without obvious scaling artefacts. Once you have enough pixels to work with, you won't notice the odd non-integer scaling issue and you greatly increase the chances of being able to scale on an integer. Think of it as like an old-school CRT.
Not sure how much it affects battery life, though.
