At last, a foldable for people locked in the Apple ecosystem- that's it. The opening animation had me for a few hours too, until someone said something- one of those 'once you see it, you can't unsee it' things. I grabbed my Fold 7 and opened it, and there it was: instinctively, one opens it like a book, edge on; you never see the outer screen! Oh no, but we're opening it wrong; we must do it 'the Apple way': hold it in your right palm, and then use your left hand to pry it open, remembering it has no Face ID, so make sure your right thumb sits on the sensor/power button. If you don't do it like this, you can't show off how superior Apple's UI is to everyone else's, and being seen with an iPhone doing things the 'iPhone way' is the whole point of owning a status symbol; you need to be able to look down on others opening it the wrong way to validate your purchase.

I was hoping it would be something impressive so I could unify with my wife (she alternates iPhone 16 -> Samsung S24 Ultra, now looking at iPhone 18), but its fat, wide form factor is great for watching movies; for my reading habits, it's worse. I already have the ideal form factor: the Fold 7 (my third Fold, after the Fold 3), as it's almost as large as an iPhone 17 or S26 when closed and can be used with one hand. The wide format needs two hands even when closed. Oh movies? If you commute on public transport in London, New York, etc., great; as a hybrid 2/3 (office/home) employee who walks to work, and agrees with David Lynch on how watching a movie on a phone robs you of the experience, I prefer to take my time and watch them on my 85" TV.

As for 'backlash', looks like someone on that hate platform known as 'X', wow, what a backlash! Notebookcheck used to be full of detailed, reference-worthy reviews; however, I haven't seen it in a while, and with articles like this, it's easy to see why.

Apple will still sell more than whatever Samsung or those cringe Chinese brands come up with. That's the fact.

"Losers focus on winners. Winners focus on winning." You see this in the ad campaigns of Apple and Samsung. Samsung loves to take potshots at Apple, the cringe far exceeds anything from Ballmer-era Microsoft.

Perhaps it's that innate Korean inferiority complex. There's a reason why South Korea is a hub for cosmetic surgery.

Advice to Samsung: focus on improving your own products, don't lose sleep over whatever Apple is doing.

Yeah, apple fans are delusional... sort of par for the course. Samsung made all their displays for years, still do. Apple did the same thing every year. Nothing new, ever. Just a button you massage... then they waited until every other company to innovate and then did an animation on their hamstrung, childish os? What are they smoking in their tents at the apple camp? Ridiculous takes 🙄

The "criticism" is mostly from Apple sheep who fall for all the gimmicks that Apple put forward. They are 8 years too late, and all they can do is some animations that a random user clones in a day. It wasn't Samsung that cloned it, it was the users. Of course, Apple users wouldn't get it, because they've never gone outside their walled gardens, and can never do so.

Apple is 8 years late to foldables market. Their only trick is an animation that was re done by a reddit user in 4 hrs? That's it. It took apple 8 years to buy Samsung displays that fold. But it took 4 hrs for a random user to re do apple's "magic"? Lol seems like one is a basic gimmick and the other one is actual hardware innovation.

It took Apple's late entry into the foldable market to get long-time foldable users to think twice about their devices' software. This is one criticism currently being voiced repeatedly in light of various experiments with the iPhone Duo's animations and features. The other is directed at Samsung, which, as a pioneer in the field may have placed too little emphasis on the software aspect of foldables.
