I am working on a non drm-next (native Linux kernel) patch set alongside a proper distribution for this.
Obviously, this is for AMD GPUs, but on my NVIDIA GPU I noticed softer image when HDMI VRR was enabled with my QD-OLED TV (someone else also noticed it). So, you may not want to wait until VRR is implemented and just test / use it now, without ever using VRR. I think I also noticed a shorter input lag with VRR disabled, another reason not to use VRR.
