If I pay for a game, I expect to own a copy in perpetuity. Any move from Sony or others that abrogates that right is going to get short shrift from gamers. Conversely, any game marketplace that guarantees that right is going to earn incalculable loyalty and market share. Time will tell, but gamers are a canny and obstinate bunch and I have a feeling Sony may have just shot itself in the foot.

I would not consider supporting 63 out of 989 of OG Xbox titles and 632 out of 2155 360 titles as good retro compatibility.

Would not expect any better next gen, if that's their track record on current gen systems.

Only way for true preservation and real compatibility is by using community made emulators.

These companies are all the same. That's all that's being taught here.

Xbox has the retrocompatibility. I really hope they take advantage of this and offer physical media for their games. That'd teach Sony.

Sony has not addressed the backlash it has been receiving since the digital-only future it projected recently. While the company waits for things to calm down, gamers are standing on business, trying to hit the company where it hurts: its wallet.
