Quote from: Phil995511 on Yesterday at 13:17:00M.2 SSDs are far too limited in storage capacity and their retail price is much too high compared to platter drives. And unfortunately, there are no affordable 16 GB 2.5-inch SATA SSDs available, otherwise I would have already bought two to replace my platter drives...

Even if you could I wouldn't bother, the problem with larger SSDs is they use QLC which have shorter lifespan and slower than even standard disks. Only their access times is faster.

Shopping SSDs these days is a huge pain as even same SKU can have TLC secretly swapped for QLC or SLC cache shrunk. In sense just like how modern laptop cpus where they have same name but different wattages. At very least with a cpu you can figure out it is a lower wattage through data but QLC is hard to test for due to the SLC cache you have to write to the whole thing to figure it out (unless the flash modules themselves are labeled with a model number)

These practices should really be illegal.

Could also be due to the fact that NVMe is king now and that most people who still need a SATA SSD will be fine picking one of the many no-name options on Amazon.

QuoteWell, generally, SATA ssds are cheaper, and a good way to give life to an old computer. NVME+stat enclouser is going to cost you more, especially if that enclosure needs to be pci/nvme m2 support and not sata m2

Of course samsung themselves weren't ever known for cheap ssds.

Indeed :)

In practice, the need for SATA devices is not about to disappear.

Many professionals and individuals need large amounts of storage space to store photos, music, videos, or make backups... It's not just gamers who need computer equipment!

Personally, I only have a single 4TB M.2 SSD for my OS (Debian 13). In addition to that, I have two 16TB SATA hard drives and a SATA DVD/Blu-ray burner.

M.2 SSDs are far too limited in storage capacity and their retail price is much too high compared to platter drives. And unfortunately, there are no affordable 16 GB 2.5-inch SATA SSDs available, otherwise I would have already bought two to replace my platter drives...

What is certain is that manufacturers are charging far too high prices, particularly in the SSD sector ;-( As a result, they are preventing themselves from selling their products in large quantities...

The whole article is based on claims made by one person. Yetnesh, please be a journalist and ask Samsung and retailers what they have to say, can you?

I dreamt of some time building a workstation with several GPUs and an appropriate amount of RAM. However, if manufacturers want to price us out, I will pray my current computer runs forever...

If you want to preview what RAM and memory price hikes look like just go to an Apple store and play around with the spec configurator.

The beginning of the end of the personal desktop and possibly laptop market.  Interesting, didn't see it coming from pricing going up.

Samsung is reportedly preparing to wind down its SATA SSD business, and a notable hardware leaker warns the move could have broader implications for consumer storage pricing than Micron's decision to end its Crucial RAM lineup. The report suggests reduced supply and short-term price pressure may follow as the market adjusts.
