Die Leica SL der nächsten Generation soll nicht von Leica entwickelt werden, sondern von Panasonic. Nachdem Leica bereits Panasonic-Kameras mit Leica-Logo und höherem Preis im Sortiment hat, soll der Konzern auch die Panasonic S1RII als Leica-Kamera neu auflegen.
