$20K is the track package though, with ceramic brakes included. It is not the price of the whole car.

all that to hide the abysmal range.

The main goal of a car is to move around, so range should be 1st priority above all else.
What in the world are you talking about? The first thing when you go into Tesla's website and click Model S, the first spec it gives you is range, followed by top speed, than 0 to 60.

The Model S in particular has spectacular range of 405 miles on the 5 cycle test, though 396 miles on the Plaid version.

A new Twitter teaser from Tesla shows the Model S Plaid ripping around a track, reaching speeds in excess of 200 mph. The Model S Plaid launched with a top speed of 163 mph that was later upped to 175 mph via the addition of Track Mode. Previously, Elon Musk revealed that the only way to safely get the Plaid to its originally promised 200 mph limit was with ceramic brakes.
