Neat technique. However, if it can do 8K@30, then I wonder what would prevent it from doing 4K@120. This linearization of the quadratic complexity of resolution doubling is a bit baffling to me. First we saw dual-mode monitors that could do 4K@60 but only FHD@120 instead of 240, and now we're seeing the same thing in the content upscaling space. There must be some deeper reason.

Either way, this will definitely soften the performance and/or quality blow associated with choosing higher resolution display hardware.

A reliable Sony analyst has delivered more details about performance targets for the PlayStation 5 Pro. Reportedly, the PS5 Pro will be capable of hitting 4K/60 FPS and 8K/30 FPS but only by using proprietary upscaling technology.
