Quote from: Deya on December 29, 2023, 14:29:17I had egolf 2016 with 26kw battery, its original range was 100 miles, now it is 85 miles, (not big loss)
but keep in mind you reach this range without A/C (heat or cool)
And with outside temperature between 60-80F with normal driving style

That's how all ev cars were tested

Gas and electric cars take the same test. With exception of later years where EPA allowed small production EVs to take 2 cycle test then subtract 20%. But usually if they do that, they get lower range score than if they take the 5 cycle test

Quote from: Lux on December 29, 2023, 12:12:55Are you telling me that 30% degradation of battery equal 50% degradation in range .

The article says "over 30%", that said based on the numbers of 14kwh / 21kwh = 66%, so 34% degradation

Taking a guess, the 40 miles range was based on his driving habits, not the EPA test (which is 83 miles)

Quote from: Redaktion on December 27, 2023, 21:54:18This means that the Volkswagen EV has lost over 30 percent of its original capacity due to battery degradation

That is one of the issues of shorter range EVs, battery lifespan is based on cycle life and how deep the cycles are. Which means a short range EV goes through far larger % degradation given same distance traveled

On top of that, the 2016 e-golf did not include liquid coolant for the battery, which means it would suffer greater degradation due to the heat

Quote from: Peter Roberts on December 28, 2023, 22:41:02You say this car has driven 125,000 miles and been charged 1,000 times. This means it was charged every 125 miles.

You then say the original range is 80 miles.

Something not quite right here.

It says "Over" 1000 times, not 1000 times.

Quote from the article: "over 1,000 charging cycles".
Also, 80 miles is the official EPA range and not the real-world range.

Elias, your anecdotal that your suspension is OK, isn't relevant other than to you.  What I wanted to read was how much a new batteries would cost. The first car is for sale with a sodium battery.  Such a battery will be cheaper, and hopefully available as a replacement eventually for existing motors

JAC Motors, a Volkswagen-backed Chinese automaker, is about to launch the first mass-produced electric vehicle (EV) with a sodium-ion battery through its new Yiwei brand. Although sodium-ion battery tech has a lower density (and is less mature) than lithium-ion, its lower costs, more abundant supplies and superior cold-weather performance should accelerate mass EV adoption. JAC Yiwei EV hatchback deliveries will begin in January.

Any idea how this car would be recycled after its lifetime? I wonder how it would perform in extreme weather considering the battery's extreme weather loss of charge through heating and cooling. I am driving a 25 year old ICE still has the original suspension components and engine!

The model T was 20Hp and had a maximum speed of 40mph.
Look how far the ICE vehicles have progressed, just as EV's will.

Even when it was brand-new from the factory, the electric Volkswagen Golf from the 2016 model year had a comparatively modest EPA range of just 80 miles per charge. As 2023 draws to an end, a well-known YouTuber illustrates how practical the almost 8-year-old VW e-Golf is today with a noticeably degraded EV battery.
