Title: Asus VivoBook Pro 17 N705UD (i7-8550U, GTX 1050) Laptop Review
Post by: Redaktion on March 08, 2018, 07:30:03
Power on a budget. The 17-inch counterpart to the VivoBook Pro we reviewed last year is now in our labs. Now equipped with an 8th-gen Intel CPU, IPS display, and NVMe SSD, can it resolve the quibbles which plagued the previous unit? Our full review awaits.

Very strange hole for the fan in the motherboard.

any plans for a full teardown?  would be interesting to see the steps involved.  Also using throttlestop I found helps a bit to keep the temps down and keep the CPU from throttling. (http://imgur.com/nGVTNfZ.png)

So the panel (LP173WF4-SPF5) was reviewed at laptopmedia dot com for severla laptops and results showed no PWM (flicker) when reducing brightness. So are you sure theresults you posted are for the ASUS N705UD with the LG LP173WF4-SPF5 panel? So I'm confused about this. I mean either the results aren't right here, or laptopmedia has a mistake on all 8 or so reviews they did for this panel. Can you clarify this point as to PWM or not for the LP173WF4-SPF5 panel? I work on my computer a lot and this is important for me (and others).

I bought this laptop and it has terrible coil whine in games...I am already at the 3rd replacement. The second had coil whine also when I was streaming youtube videos...
This one also has a problem with the fan on the left side. When it is under load, if I press W,A,S or FN or the case on the back it makes a terrible buzzing noise. I really don't know if I should replace this one too or just get my money back.
Except these problems, the laptop is really great.

@VisobookOwner,
Would you mind sharing your Throttlestop params? I am trying to find the best ones (-0,1V cpu/cpu cache) but wonder what else I can do.
Thanks!

There is quite a serious typo in the PWM frequency. Your verdict say 119Hz, but the scope screenshot shows 119kHz!

Do NOT buy! Needs a new motherboard after less than 3 years...

Asus VivoBook Pro 17 Model X705UDR:  The concern expressed about the somewhat flimsy plastic case in this review has proven to be correct. My wife's left hinge mounting bracket inserts molded into the outer top (LCD) cover / bezel have broken loose requiring a new bezel for proper repair. (the inserts are small threaded metal cylindrical inserts that are molded into the plastic for the hinge retaining screws) The hinge assembly  on the left side is somewhat stiff and the failure likely occurred due to the uneven distribution of force on the case while opening & closing, resulting in the inserts breaking loose from the plastic (breaking the plastic).

To anyone interested in how to tear-down (if I understand your interest), Google for a U-Tube video on replacing the display you will likely find the complete disassembly.
