LG has announced the UltraGear OLED 32GS95UE, one of several gaming monitors it plans to reveal next month at CES 2024. Like the ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDP, the UltraGear OLED 32GS95UE can switch between two display modes, which LG calls 'Dual-Hz'.

Neat. This will be a nice "best of both worlds" product for some.

If it has the bandwidth for 4K at 240Hz, though, should it not be able to do 1080p at 960Hz? If the limitation is in the OLED matrix itself, it seems suspicious that 1080p gets exactly double the 4K refresh rate rather than some arbitrary number like 508Hz or 366Hz.

There must be some deep technical reason related to horizontal vs vertical scanning at play.

I would hazard a guess and pin in it onto the controller. It's most likely too expensive to get a controller that is polwerful enough to go over 480hz and deal with scaling and everything else. The other reason might be connector bandwith.

I wonder if it has something to do with being able to scan across two rows simultaneously (activate both horizontal connections) but not two columns (more complicated to skip over subpixels).
