MIUI may be one of the most popular custom versions of Android, but it does contain adverts. Other custom Android skins are no different, but few OEMs actively teach their fans how to switch them off. Xiaomi is doing so in China, though.

Xiaomi found some "Honesty Paint"; they're painting themselves with it for some reason:
1. promote sales?
2. convince early-adopters
3. why not disable them(ad settings & apps) by default?
Well, at most 10% of Xiaomi users might disable those settings. It's easier to install DNS-Filter(VPN service) & black-list all suspicious domain

There should be some context here. Not all Xiaomi devices have ads baked in. The European ones never had any.

Mine is European and certainly has ads integrated.

Nah, it has been rumored for a few years now that Xiaomi is trying to establish itself more to Westerners (the US to be more precise) and now that Huawei has lost a huge market share in the West, and OnePlus has fallen off badly, Xiaomi wants to desperately appease Westerners towards its products.
probably because those who aren't bothered enough by ads don't turn them off. so xiaomi gets their revenue. and for everyone else there are official steps to turn them off, so you don't get a "but xiaomi has ads"-crowd.

Either it doesn't have and EU ROM, or you selected a non-EU country when first using the phone. In any case, it's on you.
Sadly, ads are just the cost you have to pay to get really top smartphones at knockdown, bargain prices. Nobody beats Xiaomi on value. Not even close. So, why is this? Cross selling their diverse product range and selling advertising space. It's a lot of revenue. I'm willing to put up with it because their phones are just way out there ahead of anyone else in their price to performance ratio. This whining annoys me about the ads. Do you all want to pay more or put up with a few ads?
