At the listed price, this seem dumb as you can get an adapter card and one of those recently discounted m.2 SSD and get similar performance and cheaper, not to mention the possibility of moving to a laptop or newer motherboard with slot for m.2

Definitely not worth it.
You can get any 2TB PCIE4 drives at way cheaper price. Even further 1TB PCIE5 drives.

I agree with you, but for those stuck with old hardware it's a good deal. Or for those whose only valid option to add some more storage is the PCIe slot.
