Title: Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 G732LXS laptop review: Frontier runner
Post by: Redaktion on July 20, 2020, 14:25:51
While many high-end laptops are rather discreetly designed, the Strix Scar 17 is visually clearly aimed at gamers. The tested model, G732LXS, can show off with Nvidia's currently strongest notebook GPU. However, Asus has opted for the weakest TGP version of the RTX 2080 Super.

I bought the 2070 super version last week.

So far my opinion of the laptop is mostly positive.  I went in knowing that there is not enough airflow due to the feet not lifting the laptop away from the surface enough.   I added another layer to the back feet and have some air flow holes below the fans.

Playing non demanding games (World of Warcraft) on quiet mode is fine.   I don't notice any heat and it doesn't get loud at all.

Playing more demanding games requires performance mode if you want the fps and to make better use of the screens refresh rate.  Turbo mode doesn't seem to provide any increased performance, but the system is a bit cooler.   It does get loud, but not annoying.  Headphones are needed, but that's the same for most gaming laptops these days.

The screen is nice and smooth.  Wish it was a bit brighter, but indoors it's awesome. The 300hz refresh rate is very comfortable on the eyes.  While overkill, I notice I don't get headaches like on my old screen.   Being red/green colourblind I can't say anything about the colour accuracy.

Typing is okay.  Nothing special, but definitely not bad.  Same with the track pad.

Price is expensive.   I was looking at the Max 17, but to spec it similar to this came out much more $$$ and I wouldn't have received it for over a month.

Overall, a satisfied customer.   If you purchase, make sure you can help improve the air flow for a quieter system.

Oh, I only undervolted the CPU to -.50.  I didnt' try to go any more.  The max in the bios is -.80.

A 3000euro RTX2080Super equipped flagship with qlc ssd, only three usb type-a ports, no ports on the right side, no thunderbolt, 15.6inch-sized keyboard and touchpad, and lots of empty space inside. Only Asus make such perfunctory flagships.

This looks like a great product, but I think it's a slight mismatch of cpu/gpu, my personal opinion would be to go with the i7-9750H/RTX 2070 combination, increase in price versus performance is not justified in my book, the thermal limits of the case impede on performance on more heat generating combinations. Screen wise I think 144hz is awesome, 240hz could be future proof, but 300hz, I think is just an excessive splurge, to say the least.
