Be prepared to carry around a bunch of adapters if you plan on buying the latest Surface Laptop. The newest models haven't improved upon one of the weakest aspects of the Surface Laptop 2 series to make alternatives like the Dell XPS series, HP Spectre series, or Asus ZenBook series appear more versatile.

The entire device is a poorly designed exercise in Conway's law with a limited hardware setup for a premium price. Not to mention the proprietary connector nobody wants sucking up most of the possibilities. Even apple figured that out by this point. It's basically a MacBook at a near MBP price, with a bed on ryzen fanboys ability to herd sales.
This comment is spot on - Thunderbolt 3 is the epitome of versatility. With the entire market shifting to Thunderbolt 3, this was a bad move by Microsoft. This could have been an amazing laptop.
