Title: Apple, Intel to tap into TSMC's 3 nm process for 2022 chips, would hypothetically see an Apple M1 fabricated on the new node making big gains
Post by: Redaktion on July 04, 2021, 12:18:46
Apple and Intel will be among the first to utilize TSMC's new 3 nm fabrication node, according to Nikkei Asia. The new technology will bring inherent performance improvements over the 5 nn process of 10 to 15 percent and improved efficiency of between 25 to 30 percent.

"Intel, on the other hand, is new to TSMC as it has typically used its own foundries to fabricate its own chips. "

Intel has been building 7nm eyeq5 chips at tsmc since 2018.

They also build eASIC chips and  Habana Gaudi chip there.

Also, Intel has reported that Xe-HPG are built externally, as are the compute and IO tiles for Xe-HPC.  Some leaks say these are also at TSM.

The fact they've kicked everyone's a** for many years using the same 14nm and old Skylake architecture is an impressive feat in itself. Give Intel 3nm and a brand new arch and it's RIP to everyone.

@Real, you must have slept through the last year. You could brush up on the facts by perusing the many articles on Anandtech that fail to show that a** kicking Intel superiority that you take for granted. Personally, I doubt Intel has anything ready that can prevent it falling further behind this year and next. AMD and Apple are the outfits showing what outright CPU performance leadership and Perf/W leadership looks like today.
