Title: First RTX 2070 Super / 2060 Super laptop GPU scores spotted on 3DMark and Geekbench
Post by: Redaktion on February 25, 2020, 16:32:25
The latest 3DMark and Geekbench results suggest the new RTX Super laptop GPUs are around 15% faster than the non-Super models. Spec-wise, the Super models will include 14 Gbps GDDR6 VRAM chips and retain the same TDP values. We also know that Ampere GPUs are right around the corner, so is it really worth getting these GPUs now?

Ampere for laptops is almost a year away, it's not gonna appear any earlier than the holiday season. Makes me sad, but such has been life for a long time now, and Super for laptops is just a confirmation that Ampere for laptops is not coming soon.

Which means I have to try to make the current laptop last for another year, because Turing wasn't very good when it launched, and it certainly makes no sense to buy it now if you're not in a dire need of a new machine.

Agreed. I was clinging to the hope that AMD might pull out something that at least initiates some price competition, but we haven't even seen RDNA-based notebooks on the market yet and RDNA 2 will probably be arriving around the same time as Ampere at best.

The laptop version of the RTX supers, is a much dialed down version of the desktop version. It's probably as fast as a GT 1060 or something.

If they would run an RTX 2060 Super at lowest power settings, reducing GPU clock speeds to 1500Mhz, it would still require about 75Watts (+35W for an efficient laptop), that's well over 100W of heat generation.
And it would perform about 2/3r to 3/4th of the desktop version, at best.

Ampere mobile will be late.  AMD will use the opportunity, and 7nm working designs, to win customer designs and marketshare.  Basically they'll do to Nvidia what they've just done to Intel.
