Title: Lenovo: ThinkPad T470p likely won't get a successor in form of a T480p
Post by: Redaktion on December 13, 2017, 20:57:31
The ThinkPad T-Series is apparently getting an update soon as the CES 2018 draws near – but one model of the 2017-lineup seems to be getting the axe. The T480p as the successor of the T470p could be made obsolete by the new 15 W Quad-Core CPUs.

Bad move. The H series business laptop is still a niche that needs filling. If they use the 28W Kaby Lake-R chips...then okay, but they ain't. Bad move Lenovo. Watch Dell come out with a better XPS and Precision with the new H series laptop and take over.

This is bad news. HP already did this a while ago by removing all the quad cores from their Elitebook lineup and you could only get a quad core with the ZBook, which is expensive, heavy, loud, overheats, and has a brick for a power supply.

And it seems like Thinkpad is going the way of HP by ruining the classis T series and making it into a ultrabook, eager for that Apple money. But they don't understand that people who buy a Macbook will never buy a Thinkpad no matter how similar it is, and even if they manage to remove all the ports.

Both T470 and T470s are newly designed with the TB3 port while T470p keeps the same design as T460p. It looks like that Lenovo made the decision a while ago.

The T4x0p model has 2 years redesign cycle. The previous model was T450p, the current is T470p and the next will be T490p.

Just because 8th Gen H-series processor will not be announced until March or April 2018, Lenovo can't announce T480p at CES

@Sim,
while that might be the case, the source clearly states that Lenovo has discontinued this product line. I guess we have to wait and see, but this is based on the information of a Lenovo partner, they have likely seen the roadmaps for early 2018.

@Konstantinos,
there was no T450p, because the Broadwell-generation did not have Quad-Core CPUs (or rather, they were released really late when Skylake was already around the corner).

You were probably thinking about the T460p, which is the direct successor of the still current T470p. T460p came out in 2016 and the T470p came out in 2017, so I would say this line is not on a 2 year release-cycle.

A T480 with i5-8250u configured TDP up 25 watts is good though for my daily driver
