Title: Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 1 review: With AMD Renoir the fastest 13-inch ThinkPad laptop
Post by: Redaktion on August 18, 2020, 11:11:22
As the newest small ThinkPad laptop, the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 1 is the continuation of the traditional ThinkPad X series. In 2020, the AMD version bears the same name as the Intel model - and it is much faster. Buyers still have to live without Thunderbolt, but the performance advantage is so big that we do not consider it a deal-breaker.

Why does this model existed? It is heavier while have less battery and less screen area than T14s.

The X13 is more compact than the T14s and it is cheaper. So for corporate customers, it can be an attractive choice if they want to save a little compared with the T14s (while getting an equally mobile machine).

Giving your workers with narrower keyboard, smaller screen while sacrifice mobility (heavier and less battery life) laptops in order to save a little bit of money doesn't make sense to me though.

Thunderbolt needed:
Docking station over thunderbolt
10 Gbit Ethernet cards
External graphics card

The four keys near the Enter are smaller, which makes touch typing a nightmare for many languages.

The 15 inch Thinkpads have less bezels around the keyboard. It would make so much more sense to use the exact keyboard from the 14 inch and the keyboard bezel from the 15 inch to make the 13 inch smaller. It's not like there are any ports that need the extra room on the sides.

I vaguely recall that it might be using a keyboard designed for a 12" model. Cost saving.

Low production values.
I wonder if Lenovo have been working from home this year?

Should be noted that US keyboard layout is totally fine on these. User with other layouts will suffer, however.

Where is the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme or at least T15p with AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS (35Watt) and RTX 3060 Max-Q?

There's plenty of room in this chassis, and the Asus G14 showed it works with decent thermals.

The Legion 5/7's keyboards are trash compared to a ThinkPad if you need to type all day. And absolutely agree:

The X13 squished some keys with non-US layout despite having plenty of space on the left/right chassis - very lazy designers, and we really need 1 single global keyboard layout, same with electric standards, plugs, right side driving and Metric system.

It seems that the author has forgotten to add the section about keyboard, touchpad and connectivity.

@A.,
see the intro to this review:

"Since Lenovo is re-using the design of the Lenovo ThinkPad X390/X395 without changes, this review is an update that skips the description of the design and focuses on the screen and internals. For details on the design, look no further than the detailed Lenovo ThinkPad X390 review."

We got 2 of the X13s and ordered the 1920x1080 IPS FHD 500 nit screens. The screens we got are some of the worst we've ever seen. The privacy guard is a useless joke in that it renders the entire screen dark even if you are in front of it. Furthermore, with the privacy screen off the screen is still dark with shadows and there is no viewing angle that does not have shadows. Even sitting directly in front of the screen you see shadows. And it is not bright at all- 500 nits is supposed to be bright but even on the highest setting the screen is not very bright. And how this is considered to be an IPS with a wide viewing angle is beyond me.
Pitiful.
We are shipping them back.

To everyone saying this model is pointless and the T14s is better in every way. That may be so, but the reason I am going for this one over the T14s is because I need a display with decent sRGB coverage (95%+). On the other hand the T14s is a "panel lottery" with 3 out of 4 panels being garbage tier, and only 1 being decent. So yeah, unfortunately the T14s is frustratingly unacceptable to me in that regard.
