Just yesterday, MSI teased the company's first gaming handheld console. The teaser video gave little details, but we eventually got to know the name thanks to a promotional store poster; it's called MSI CLAW. Now, the portable gaming device has popped up on Geekbench, which has given away its core specs.

Until companies are willing to take a financial hit on this type of product, they will remain a very niche toy. It's one of the main reasons Valve is doing so well with the Steam Deck. Personally, I won't spend over $500 on this or anything else, and that amount is a stretch. Otherwise, I'll stick with much more reasonably-priced Android devices (or another Steam Deck iteration).

I concur with you on the get an Android device in replacement of the "niche toy" you said, but you haven't made clear why they're a financial hit ,better yet why the steam deck is doing well, elucidate the readers.

The 'console market' almost follows the 'Schick' model developed nearly 100yrs ago. :)

What is the 'Schick model'?? Nearly give away the 'handle' and make up for it in the margin on selling razor blades. :)

The Console OEM's marketing factors in a 'target price' which may often times be low margin or at a loss when the Console is first introduced and the OEM then hopes to make a profit selling games & content as well as the Console BOM costing much less over the life span of the product.

So how/why is Valve making any money with the Steam Deck? Good question.

While not everything will run on a Steam Deck the library of games is both impressive and likely represent HIGH margin for Valve to sell to its Steam Deck customers.

The missing Elephant in the room is a direct comparison of a game title running on the Steam Deck and running on WIN11 handheld device.

Which device provides the better experience?

While just about any WIN game might be able to be ran on a WIN powered device, the same can't be said about the Steam Deck.

Would you be sold on AArch64 based handheld that sips power at ultra low wattage then?

AMD 8000 series which are essentially rebadged 7000 series but more efficient and rumored to perform better than 7000 series at lower wattages.
You need much higher than 28W to match and beat 7840u in most cases according to early reviews, nobody wants a handheld that only lasts a little more than an hour
