Title: GPD Win 4 is fast, but it's as loud as many gaming laptops
Post by: Redaktion on March 18, 2023, 07:13:26
Great power comes with great fan noise, apparently. The GPD Win 4 crams a laptop-class Ryzen 7 6800U CPU in a form factor that's twice. As a result, the internal fan has to work overtime to keep the processor under control.

Zen 4 and 780M. That's the way to go. Hopefully AMD starts shipping sooner than later.

For handhelds maybe. RTX 4050 in Asus Rog Flow Z13 tablet already got outstanding reviews (an improvement over 3050 Ti from last year).  And as 6800U the new one will be as expensive if not more and in very few devices.

Does capping the FPS to 30fps (with or without FSR 2 activated) improve the thermal & fan noise?
For some of us honestly, we don't mind the "console-level fps".

I looked up the noise levels for the Steam Deck and they are all over the place.

pcgamer.com/how-loud-is-steam-deck/
"The fact that it's still only hitting a 56dB average in our testing is pretty decent"

arstechnica.com/gaming/2022/02/steam-deck-the-comprehensive-ars-technica-review/6/
"(When the fans turn on, you can expect roughly 35 dB of fan noise—a somewhat typical noise level to other modern, Switch-like x64 PCs but much louder than the efficient, lower-powered Switch itself.)"

forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho/2022/02/08/5-surprising-new-details-about-valves-steam-deck/
"Under this kind of load, Gamers Nexus measured a peak noise output of 38 dBA."

ign.com/articles/steam-deck-review
"49 decibels, which is louder than a PS5"

One of those Steam Deck reviews capped FPS to 30 and got better battery life and lower fan noise. It should be the same for this. And the GPD Win 4 is going to be hard-pressed to hit 1080p60 in all games anyway.
