Title: Like a Dell XPS 17, But Worse: LG Ultra 17 Laptop Review
Post by: Redaktion on September 30, 2020, 00:59:08
Do you want to spend $1400 USD for a 17-inch laptop with slow Core i5 performance, no AdobeRGB coverage, and no Thunderbolt 3? This overpriced LG Ultra 17 is unique but in all the wrong ways.

Look at that trackpad
Why tf does LG suck at laptops. Are they even trying? Do they not know that to make a laptop look modern, you need (but not limited to) at least 2 things:
1) High screen to body ratio (which they have)
2) A large trackpad

The latter is something that they clearly did not care about. I feel like laptop manufacturers don't watch any reviews about their products, if they have then their laptops would be getting 100% reviews.

I have the 2019 LG Gram 17 with an i7-8565U running Ubuntu, and it's a very pleasant machine, apart from the slightly mushy keyboard (and the numpad that keeps getting in the way). The Ultra seems to be neither fish nor fowl, not having the class-leading light weight, nor a beefed-up CPU.

Same here, using a Gram 17 with 8565U with an eGPU with a 2070 (buying a 3080 for it as soon as I can actually get one.. )

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Gram 17.. I have no idea what they are thinking with this one. I guess its OK for someone that basically wants the Gram 17 with a semi-capable dGPU. No TB3 kills this, but I think the reason there is no TB3 is there aren't any PCIe lanes left due to the inclusion of the dGPU. The 10510U has the same 16 lanes, but with the dGPU inclusion there's no lanes left over.

8 lanes for two 4x NVMe
4 lanes for ports
4 lanes probably for the 1650..

Clearly these professional multinationals have been working from home and it shows. The XPS 17 isn't great either.

i have the 11th gen version of lg ultra pc 17, i think a review of it will be interesting. i find it a well rounded pc even if it is still pricey. performance are ok, but my biggest concern is the high temperature reached while gaming. about noise it is quite often silent, however i find the fan noise just a little high pitched

LG is finally selling a 17 Gram with antiglare display at Costco.

That's some real progress!
