Title: The GeForce RTX 3070 Founders Edition launch was another mess for NVIDIA
Post by: Redaktion on October 30, 2020, 01:25:42
Today's launch of the GeForce RTX 3070 was another bust for fans of Founders Edition cards, following a major retailer emptying customer baskets to attempt to cope with the influx of website traffic. Unsurprisingly, resellers have flooded market places like eBay with RTX 3070 Founders Edition cards, where they are selling for nearly 50% more than the RTX 3080.

Mess for Nvidia? More like for retailers. It may be exactly the same for AMD as with sich a big demand there is no way to not have sites crashing and stock selling out so quickly.

It's certainly possible to avoid sites crashing. However, few engineers take their craft seriously enough to assure graceful degradation of service. Not to mention designing the system so that you could quickly (and preferably automatically) add additional resources in case of such spikes. You probably don't want to pay for capacity that will be very rarely utilized, but it might be worth it to rent that capacity in those cases. Sure, there is no way to prevent running out of supply. The supply is what it is. And it can disappear before you manage to check out. Or you might get an email afterwards that you're out of luck.

You say that best buy did not have the same problems as scan but myself and several others had our card taken out of our carts mid checkout just like scan.
