Title: Hisense asserts laser TVs are the future as it claims to triple their sales in 2020
Post by: Redaktion on March 01, 2021, 23:33:33
Laser TVs are devices much more like ultra-short-throw projectors than conventional big screens. Therefore, they can deliver larger display sizes with less harmful blue light, which is what customers want these days - according to Hisense, at least. This OEM claims that it sold over three times more laser TVs in 2020 internationally compared to 2019.

Pseudo 4k, bad light rejection, rainbow artifacts, no possibility of real HDR both because of contrast and peak brightness...with MicroLED right around the corner(a Chinese brand reported to offer 135" 4K MicroLED, 2000nits, P3 gamut, unlimited contrast, 100,000hr diode life for CNY170,000 this year) whatever growth they see or claim to see would be short lived. Projectors are done.

The 325% figure could be true. But if they sold 0 units in 2019 and 3.25 in 2020, they could make the same claim. These UST projectors were a good idea as a large TV substitute 2-3 years ago but the industry was too slow to recognize this. They could eek out maybe another year of sales but 85" TVs are the norm now and Sony is releasing a mid-tier 100" model this year. Xiaomi sold a very affordable 98" TV last year which sold out every time they restocked. USTs are still a good stopgap until 100" TVs are mainstream but that window is closing fast.

I'm not interested in any Hisense stuff, or TCL or any other Chinese brands.

I largely agree, yet their offerings were even worse 2-3 years ago, plagued with sharpness and calibration issues, even further behind panels, and it would have to be 1 unit in 2019, or any growth from 0 would be infinite :)
