Jumping from the GTX 1080 to the RTX 2080 will cost users an extra $250 USD. Eurocom is proving that the MXM form factor is here to stay even in the face of Dell's proprietary DGFF solution for the Alienware Area-51m.

Have you checked to see if MSI is using MXM cards in their new GT series updates?  They've been using MXM cards for years in that line.
