Title: Razer Blade 15 OLED battery life and power consumption comparison: Bigger differences than expected
Post by: Redaktion on July 07, 2019, 05:49:04
IPS vs. OLED: The difference between minimum brightness and maximum brightness on an OLED display could be as much as 15 W compared to about 5 W on a typical IPS display. On the other hand, the difference could be as small as 2 W to 3 W when displaying dark-colored web pages.

This is a nice observation, however I curious how you could only measure the screen power consumption. Because it'll pointless since both laptop have difference spec. Gaming laptop would still consume a lot of power even during standby compared to lower spec one.

Thanks for the experiment, looking forward for the ideal test.

It doesn't work like that. To compare actual efficiency between panel technology the panels need to cover the same gamut. I bet the Chuwi doesn't even cover sRGB not to mention ARGB which the OLED usually does. For any backlit technology, the denser the CFA the worse the efficiency, no such restriction for self-emitting OLEDs (that excludes some TV OLEDs AFAIK).

Generally, the formula for OLED power consumption (roughly and can vary)

Red = 1X
Green = 2X
Blue = 3X

Yellow(Red + Green) = 3X
Purple(Red + Blue) = 4X
Sky blue(Green + Blue) = 5X

White (Red + Green + Blue) = 6X

So depending on the colors of a webpage would significantly differ the power consumption, the heavy blue blizzard page is going to take quite a bit.

But the aim is at gamers, and most games use darker color schemes

Why does it consume 12.2W when it is displaying black on minimum brightness? It should be close to 0, right?

The DDIC is still on and an OLED's DDIC should consume more power than an equivalent LCD's as it handles a more complex workload, but 12.2 does sound a little too high.

The numbers in question are the total power draw of the system as a whole, not just the screen.
