Title: 4G/LTE is going to the moon, and Nokia is going to install it there
Post by: Redaktion on October 16, 2020, 19:40:32
Nokia has secured a contract from NASA to provide it with a 4G/LTE network - for a lunar base. The US' space administration has plans to have such a structure on the moon and operational by 2028, and the Finnish brand is the one to supply the astronauts who will work there with a telecommunications infrastructure based on a common terrestrial mobile data standard.

This should be to nobody's surprise. They named it Long Term Evolution because they were clear where the limits of spectral communications were, and 4G is reasonably close given concerns of practicality. They're certainly not going to send the brute-forced 5G to the moon because of the unmanageable inefficiencies.
