Mit der Aufgabe von Google Daydream und damit Smartphone-basiertem VR ging die Befürchtung einher, dass auch Google Cardboard das gleiche Schicksal ereilt. Damit Entwickler künftig unabhängig von Google weiterhin VR-Inhalte für Smartphones entwickeln können, veröffentlicht Google Cardboard nun als Open Source Projekt.
