Apple's Vision Pro might be losing its charm, with reports indicating waning user interest

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, consumer interest in Apple's Vision Pro is on its way down, as indicated by a drop in the demand for demos at Apple Stores. While the AR/VR industry has seldom managed to maintain user enthusiasm beyond initial launch, the Vision Pro also suffers from other problems of its own making - including a high price tag, tediousness of use, and the lack of a 'killer app' for the device, as pointed out by Gurman.

Like many other Apple products, all the focus is put on the hardware when it's only half the game - nobody straps a computer to their face to watch movies they need to re-buy or look at photos, it was predictably insufficient to keep buyers interested.

Where are the apps to make this great hardware shine?

Apple claims their have hundreds/thousands of "compatible" apps for the AVP, meaning a lot of iPad apps made compatible and that are 2D windows floating in 3D space. Not sure why I'd want to buy a $3500 device for that.

Otherwise, connect it to a Mac and enjoy a single 4k monitor space to move 2D windows around and air-type/click/move without any sort of precision that will result in frustration. And neckpain, eye strain, the whole discomfort.

Developers could make cool things for it, but the pool of AVP owners is so small, there's no point in putting in money and effort for something that won't bring in the dough.

They could try to make it more enticing for gaming, but Apple doesn't have a gaming strategy at all - other than pushing iOS games as the Arcade service.

Apple needs to act quickly to add a lot more to this thing if they want to avoid seeing the AVP become a sad joke.

"Despite these concerns, it must be kept in mind that developers are hard at work exploring new applications for the Vision Pro. As they continue to come up with more apps, it is entirely possible that compelling new use cases and even the aforementioned 'killer app' might emerge, which would drive renewed interest in the product."

Everyone else in the VR world is doing the same thing.

At far lower prices.

And each year, the specs of everyone else's devices improve.

But the bad economics of investing US$3500 in a possible future utopia when US$500 will get you 80% or more of that utopia today is the real takeaway here.

I know you're an Apple fan (it says so in your bio), but sometimes it's just reality that Apple screws up and misreads the market or designs something that doesn't work (Magic Mouse anyone?) and needs to be called out on it.

Without users there won't be developer interest.

Without apps there won't be user interest.

Apple built cool tech without a realistic mass-appeal use-case.

And if Meta's tech at $500 ain't gaining traction, Apple's at 7 times that surely won't.

Keep trying, Apple!
