In a rather awkward effort aimed at reducing the production costs by a very small amount, Samsung is now using the front-facing camera to take selfies and adjust the screen brightness based on them instead of including an ambient light sensor. In some markets, Galaxy J8 owners are already receiving this feature via a software update.

To me, the sensor is good as gone. I never use it because it never works, auto brightness is always either too dark or too bright, or making seemingly random adjustments. There should be an option to set the upper and lower limits, or better, allow manual adjustments to the automatic values with machine learning based adaptation to reduce the need for adjustments with usage. We're not yet at a stage where the ambient light sensor actually does any good.
