Google+ to shut down following hacking revelation

Google has admitted that its social media app, Google+, has been hacked. This data theft has affected approximately half a million profiles. The users in question may have had many points of important user data extracted from their Google accounts.

About 90% of Google's income comes from marketing (mostly Adwords or Adsense). They have a history of creating and shutting down other services that don't directly serve marketing. Even if now they will maintain + for business partners, they don't seem to be a reliable business IT partner.

Google+ was NOT hacked. They found a software bug that was not actually used by anybody for any nefarious purposes.

Makes a big different difference when considering data protection laws. Once you think about it, you realize this was a fairly commonplace security bug patch, and Google made a big deal about it so people would accept the service shutdown more readily.
