However, a managing director for a UK IT and networking company thinks an emerging alternative is about to make these VPNs obsolete.

SD-WAN can be pretty cheap and fast in a rollout, but MPLS still provides a better quality of service for critical applications, so I don't think it will disappear anytime soon.
