Whistle while you work. Wrapped in an attractive and slim package, the Asus ROG GU501GM is a competent gaming machine that effectively marries style and power. Unfortunately, CPU stability and fan noise present major problems in an otherwise excellent, if expensive, laptop.

I've got the Best Buy/US version and it has the same panel as mentioned in the review. The AUO45ED on my laptop is a 120Hz panel.

A few things to add, the silent mode manages to be silent by throttling the components. In my case, silent mode reduces my GPU by about 400 MHz.

Removing the bottom panel is a pain. After removing all the screws you have to begin disassembly at the side vents. In the side vents you can see the tops of 3 of the clips holding the bottom panel in place. You have to push down on the clips from the side vents to create some clearance at the bottom of the panel. Then you have to kind of spudger the bottom panel off. The next trouble area is the clips near the hinge. You may have to pry the panel slightly from the side of the laptop. Once you get those off it kind of just falls off.

I also purchased the Best Buy model on-sale. Apart from the 1060 and the 120hz panel (vs 144hz panel), everything else is literally the same. The raised bottom, the BB model (GU501) is raised at the same height except it just doesn't have the fancy hinge style, it's just rubber feet.

The back cover is really easy to remove, remove the screws and once you pop one corner the rest is easily removed. I had a much easier time removing it then some of the other laptops i've owned. I'm really surprised you didn't even bother to try.

With balanced mode and -100mv and -48mv undervolt on CPU/Cache, I barely go over 80deg during gaming, good 10 deg lower than stock temps. the only part that gets hot is the top area, the keyboard remains cool and the side vents don't blow a lot of air out.

I'm pleased to own this laptop and can easily give it 9.25/10
