4K vs. battery. Aorus has made several improvements since last year's model of the X5: 4K display, Thunderbolt 3 and a Kaby Lake CPU are only a few of the positive additions. Can the X5 v7 improve its predecessor's rating (83%) or might it even reach pole position among slim gamers? We will try to find out in our review.

This is the first display with all three attributes [15.6", true-4K, G-Sync] at the same time.

Before now it was a pick-two situation. All of the 15.6" laptops that listed 4K/3840x2160 resolution with G-Sync (mostly Clevo models) used a PenTile (RG/BW) panel from Samsung. This does not produce the full detail of the resolution despite making you deal with all of the tradeoffs, and in the typical scenario where it's hidden from the buyer it is commonly regarded to be deceptive marketing. None of the 15.6" laptops with true 3840x2160 had G-Sync, and all of the true-3840x2160 G-Sync laptops were 17.3".

Gigabyte/Aorus has a good track record for this. While the P35xv5's true-4K panel was the Sharp SHP144E/JW05 panel from the Thinkpad P50, which had mediocre contrast and viewing angles despite being IPS, and while the P35x didn't have the best cooling system, they have been very good at not stooping to the level of PenTile. I also think it's worth looking into whether they've moved away from the SHP144E panel on newer models anyway, as Lenovo did on the newer P51.

Another helpful aspect of the AUO B156ZAN02.3 is that it uses a more classic mounting configuration as can be seen on panelook.com, so I would think lids wouldn't need extra screw holes or versions in order to support it. My hope is that Clevo will begin to source this panel too instead of the current not-true-4K Samsung panel, for their 4K G-Sync option.

All Aorus Laptops are frustratingly expensive in Europe. Given they are good, but not that good and have just started to work on their unbearable noise issue I fail to understand....
