More performance and a very good display. Lenovo's ThinkPad P51 is a full-fledged mobile workstation with a 15-inch display, powerful Xeon quad-core processor and a professional graphics card from Nvidia. The 4K screen in particular convinced in the review.

This refresh is DOA because of using old Maxwell GPUs. I can't understand why they would do that.

Other 15" workstation-class laptops also have maxwell GPUs (Precision 7520, Zbook 15 G4) only 17" models offer Pascal (P71, Precision 7720, Zbook 17 G4). The reason for this may be the much higher TDP of the corresponding Pascal cards. (P3000, is 75W, whereas M2200 is 45W)

@Zorro:

Maybe, but then again, TDP could be another alibi.

Dell, HP and Lenovo possibly don't have the skills to put together stable and lightweight 15 and 17" laptops, that can handle GTX1070/1080 equivalent performance. They're not major gaming brands after all.

Nevertheless if they can, they're likely anxious about the pricing for large corporations that bulk buy, which they know are already too overpriced. An additional batch of custom cooling solutions would jack up those numbers sky high. Average consumers would of course applaud a nice dGPU in a durable chassis, but businesses could disapprove, so the profit could take a hit.

Any info on the Full HD display? Is it improved over the P50 and how much more battery life could I gain if I choose that one instead of the 4k? I don't care about resolution, but I do care about color accuracy and battery life.

@Filip:
Unfortunately, same as before: jaw-dropping 250 nits of brightness, 700:1 contrast ratio, 60% sRGB / 35% AdobeRGB color gamut, and 160 degrees viewing angle. Battery life browsing (no video playback) is around 8 hours with the FHD and 6 hours with UHD, with increased brightness eating more battery on a higher resolution display.

@zobix:
P50's UHD panels solely made by Sharp. With the P51, there's a lottery between BOE (Beijing BOE Technologies) and AUO (AU Optronics). You probably already know this but quality wise, AUO>LGD>BOE.

The FullHD Lottery is really crap. At the moment i have the AUO FullHD Display in my P51. Because of a dark area it will be replaced. The AUO is sad in Colors and in Brightness. Black level is good. The new one will be a LG Display. I hope to get better Colors and more Brighness. On the P51 nonTouch FullHD there are only 2 Display. The AUO and the LG. I will report wether the LG is better or not.

How come this isn't on your Top 10 list for workstations? A common problem with NotebookCheck unfortunately. But in most other regards this site and its reviews are great!

@skan:
No they're almost identical, performance and specs-wise. But the P51 is cheaper than the HP's ZBook 15 G4 and much cheaper than Dell's Precision 7520.

Any idea if LG FHD is using PWM? i used it for an hour and it strained my eyes quite a bit. Thank you.

It seems the battery for Thinkpad P50 and P51 has two voltage 11.25V/8000mAh  and 15V /4400mAh but they have same battery type No.00NY491 SB10H45076
