What is more important for a gaming laptop - performance of features?

We just reviewed the two gaming laptops Asus ROG Strix G18 and the XMG Focus 17 M25, which follow a completely different approach. While the XMG wants to offer the best price-performance ratio, Asus prioritizes features. But what is more important?

Nobody else has chimed in? Really?

IMHO: when it comes to laptops in general there are TWO main things to consider: the inputs (keyboard & trackpad) and outputs (mainly the DISPLAY!).

Reasoning: these are the parts that the user/owner are going to interact with while using the device. Anything but an awesome experience in these areas may detract from or overshadow other features.

"Gaming Laptops" have 1-2 additional items: raw gaming performance and run time gaming on battery.

Again IMHO: I'd assume that many 'nice to have features' are lacking as gaming performance and run time on battery was the primary objectives.

Others might add "how portable is it really" to the above or might consider the "bang for the buck", however the 4 areas that I outlined above is what *I* would consider the most important.

I use my laptop for development and gaming.  I need tons of memory and a fast CPU/GPU.

Since I'm almost ALWAYS connected to a dock with keyboard, mouse and monitor the internal display is necessary when travelling so I don't care too much about it.

Easy access to RAM and M.2 ports would be really nice.  So tired of taking the entire back case off.  Only interested in 16" or smaller laptops for the dock reasons listed above.

If the GPD Win Max 2 performs it will be my next laptop.  Good enough CPU & RAM and easy travel. I'm not carrying an 18" laptop for a quick weekend trip.  I use a RoG Ally right now but the GPD Win Max 2 has caught my  attention.

For me its an easy decision - ill take the performance all day long.
My gaming laptop is essentially my gaming PC that I take with me while im away. So the fastest GPU / CPU combo i can afford is #1 priority, probably then followed by the screen, as the RAM & storage i can upgrade myself. I don't mind the weight - id sooner lug something heavy around with me that performs great than have a feather-light 'gaming' laptop that's constantly bouncing on thermal limits. I have an MSI Vector that ticks all of these boxes- its heavy but the cooling system works well & performance on its RTX4080 is stellar (I hit 50,000 on Firestrike graphics score)
