Honestly, what did you expect? Microsoft owns Activision now. It was bound to happen. MS has a history of monetization charging for stuff that used to be free.
The OG Xbox was the first console to really make online multiplayer mainstream on broadband connections but they were also the first in making it standard to charge for such a service. By contrast for Sony it was free until the launch of PS4 and free for Nintendo until the launch of the switch.
Then there's battle pass, the netflixshittification of game rental.
Now there's the recent push for copilot they're trying to shove down everyone's throats because they bought too many of Nvidia's expensive data center Hopper H200 gpu's and they're still trying to figure out a way to monetize AI and on that investment but haven't yet. Hence now pushing the costs down to consumers now instead.
